Vijay’s diet is like him – simple and nice

Vijay’s diet is much like the person that he is – simple and nice. His lunch – frugal by any standards – is actually a simple affair: just a cup of rice, `drumstick’ sambhar, and vegetable `avial’, with a lone concession to oil by way of a solitary `appalam’. Not quite the food meant for a top ranking star who can easily afford five-star meals every day.

Of late, Vijay has also been avoiding non-vegetarian food, and, many weeks, if not months, might have gone without him even touching a piece of mutton. He also does exercises regularly as he is finicky about keeping his weight under check.

If Vijay sports a slim `n’ trim look in the coming days, then you know what’s the secret behind it!

Vijay’s heroines speak about Vijay…

Trisha: I have acted with him in Ghilli, Thiruppachi and Aadhi… He has given me lots of tips about dancing, acting etc., Really, he is an all rounder with lots of talents.

Sneha: I acted with him in Vaseegara. I can’t forget the song in which we did dance movements we did like MGR and Saroja Devi. He enacts comedy very well.

Reema Sen: A very nice person.. I can’t forget acting with him in Bagavathi. He is really a gem of a person. He gives equal respect for everyone. And avoids unwanted chats.

Genelia D’Souza: Normally Hindi and Telugu actors make a lot of fuss even if one film becomes a hit… and will come with a group to shooting. But, inspite of being such a great actor, he is so simple!!! I was like a new face but still u know, how much respect he gave me?

Priyanka Chopra: Though i am a busy actresss today in Hindi, I can’t forget my first movie, my debut movie Tamizhan, and also its hero Vijay.

Tejasri: Madurey was the first movie where I acted with a big star. He dances so well!!! He stunns everyone in takes. But never speaks a lot. Very calm person…

Sonia Agarwal: I acted with Vijay in Madurey. Actually there were 3 heroines, but mine was an important role and songs were hit. It was a nice experience acting with Vijay.

Bipasha Basu: I did a guest role in Sachien because I liked the script of the movie. The shooting was in Ooty, very interesting days… Jolly unit and a calm hero…

Simran: I got introduced opposite vijay in Once More… I had acted with him in 4 films and danced with him for a song in Youth. I like his dance movements very much.

Brindha Master speaks about Vijay

Courtesy: www.kumudam.com

Brindha, the famous dance master and who recently choreographed “Olli Olli Iduppe” song from Aadhi, speaks about the heroes and heroines she has worked with, in this week’s edition of Kumudham.

An excerpt from the interview relevant to Vijay:

When “Olli Olli Iduppe” song was shot in Switzerland, it was freezing cold out there. Everyone in the unit was wearing 2 jerkins. But Vijay and Trisha danced in light dresses in a cool manner, beautifully. If there is an interest in work like this, it is really easy to work with anyone.

“On the Spot Dance” means its only Vijay. I go very cool for Vijay’s shootings. Because we can compose any step as we wish. Just I will make lights on and tell him that “this is the step”. He will watch it carefully only once and will do it as it is.

He has the name of “Great Dancer” amongst his fans today. But not even once till now, he has asked me like “I want this step” or “This step is not nice. Change it” etc.

Once we teach him something, he will immediately grasp it and does it wonderfully.

வேட்டைக்காரன் விமர்சனம் -கும்குமம்

Commercialism is not child’s play

Who is a good actor or what is good acting? To make it simple, let us try a more direct question. Which is the better performance – Prakash Raj in Kancheevaram or Vijay in Vettaikaran? Many of you might find this comparison absurd. That is completely understandable because it is difficult to adjust to a comparison which is never thought of and involves two performances that are poles apart in scope. But, let us persevere with it. Is it Prakash Raj in Kancheevaram or Vijay in Vettaikaran? To enable everyone to connect with the type of comparison that is being attempted, let us try Kamal in Anbey Sivam and Vijay in Ghilli (assuming that almost everyone has seen both these movies). Again, this is one comparison that will look totally against convention and preset notions about good acting. There is absolutely no doubt that almost everyone, if not absolutely everyone, will plump for the portrayal of Nalla Sivam by the legendary Kamal Haasan. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the choice. It was indeed a master class from Kalaignani. But, this is not about Kalaignani, this is about the other actor, Vijay, and the breed of actors that he represents

What is the class that Vijay represents? The actor, who plays to the galleries, makes movies for fans, looks to entertain and doesn’t care much about critics. One gets the feeling that this class of actors is not sometimes given the respect that is their due. Not that they seem to particularly care, they are happy to see the masses enjoying their films. But, there seems to be a general opinion floating around amongst the so called A class audiences about the full-fledged commercial actor. Some of the important points seem to be; 1. they have no brains or have stopped using them 2. they can’t act even if their life depended on it 3. can’t do anything except dance, fight and look good 4. are obsessed with their larger than life image.

Yes, some of the points mentioned here might be a bit exaggerated. But, it cannot be denied that there are many people who do carry opinions that are very much similar to the above mentioned. The point is that many of the commercial heroes of our times are taken for granted. The skill and charisma that they bring to the screen is sometimes totally ignored because they are supposed to be stereotypical or clichéd. The thing that we tend to forget sometimes is that the job they do is not everybody’s cup of tea.

It has to be admitted that pulling off a larger than life character, mouthing punch lines, bashing up 50 odd men single handedly and other such cinematic items is not child’s play. Let’s try thinking of it this way- which is the bigger challenge- playing a true to life character or a larger than life character? Playing a true to life character demands a actor to behave much like an ordinary man would do in situations that life throws at him. But, a larger than life character demands an actor to create a mould for himself, craft his own style ad become a different person, a type that does not exist in normal life. True to life characters have templates, models and examples – a larger than life character has none (except in cinema). The energy, the inspiration and the ideas have to come from within the performer. It takes a lot of work, thought and talent to make an audience take a liking to an actor in a larger than life role.

It is not every actor who can pull off a 5 fight, 5 songs and punch dialogue routine without looking silly. Only a select few have that level of screen presence and persona to make the audience (not all sections) clap in delight when they go through these predictable yet enjoyable routines. One also feels that the delivery of the punch dialogue is one of the least appreciated skills in the film industry. It takes tremendous confidence and faith in one’s ability to say lines that sometimes outgrow the script itself. Very few actors can mouth such lines without eliciting sniggers and sneers from the audience.

To see the point more clearly, try answering this question. How many commercial ‘larger than life stars’ have at least one well performed true to life character to their credit? Almost everyone, would be the answer. Every commercial star has played a down to earth guy at least once in their career if not more number of times. But, can the converse be said about actors who play only the real-life type of characters. That is, does every ‘reality’ actor have at least one ‘larger than life’ role to their credit? Very few have been successful in such attempts.

Our full fledged commercial heroes do have the ability (they may not be class actors) to play some really well fleshed out characters. But, they do their kind of stuff in the industry because that is what is given to them. This might be a controversial statement, but, a good character actor is easier to replace than a commercial star. Character artistes have specializations – some are good at comedy, some at sentiments, some at villainy, some at action etc…. but, a commercial hero is expected to do just about everything in a 3 hour film. He plays the loving son (sentiment), the man in love (romance), capers around with the comedian, dances frenetically in songs and is full of energy in the stunts. A person who can carry of all this at a time is definitely talented. It is this ambivalent skill set of a star that is sometimes portrayed as silly mindless commercialism because ‘he is capable of nothing else’.

Yes, commercial stars do fail. When they fail, they look miserable to the point of being a joke. That is because making such cocktails of entertaining ingredients has a very fine balance which can easily be upset. Making commercial entertainers is a tight rope walk and our commercial heroes are at it all the time. That is why we see them falter and fall at times. But, let us not hold it against them and certainly let us not accuse them of being non-talented dim wits who cannot act. Look at the skills that they have, the entertainment that they deliver and the mass appeal that they command – you might be convinced that it takes a lot of skill and work to be one of that kind. Let us give them the respect that is their due.

Vettaikaran movie is a must watch. Vettaikaran was one of the most awaited movie of Vijay in the year 2009.The movie stars actor Vijay and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles.

Vijay playes the role of an auto driver in the movie. His role reminds us of superstar Rajinikanth, who played the role of an auto driver in the hit Baasha. Actress Anuskha, Arundhati fame, plays the role of a medical college student.
Vettaikaran’s story is based in unwanted elements that needs to be removed from the society and the country. Who other than Vijay can fit in such a role? One by one he removes all those unwanted elements. Meanwhile he falls in love with Anushka, who comes from a middle class family. Both share a great chemistry, whether it’s fighting or romancing. Initially both fight every now and then, but finally they fall in love.

Vettaikaran takes on US Storm!

The response to Vettaikaran, which was released on December 18th in New Jersey, has been amazing and Adlabs Big Cinemas decided to add one more show to satiate the Vijay fans.

The show in California, Bay Area opened to packed houses and industry pundits say that the opening that Vettaikaran received is the second highest, while Pokkiri still remains the top.

In Connecticut and Boston, the film is to be screened during the New Year weekend due to heavy public demand. There are also reports that the online tickets have already been sold out like hot cakes.

The cash registers at the theatres in Texas (Dallas & Houston), Atlanta and Seattle, where Vettaikaran is being screened, are ticking rapidly.

The East Coast Storm, however, forced the Vijay fans in Virginia, Boston and Connecticut area to stay indoors on December 19th and 20th and the collections were badly hit. The New Jersey collections also took a blow due to this on Saturday and Sunday. However, things turned out to be good on December 21st and 22nd.

With the Christmas and New Year weekend round the corner, the collections are expected to go up even further.

‘Vettaikkaran’ released on 18th December all over the world is enjoying good reception in all places equally. The film released with a bang worldwide in nearly 500 screens that includes 16 in Chennai city alone. Especially the Vettaikkaran’s reach and response is grand, say the sources.

Vettaikkaran’s greet was so marvellous in New Jersey that Adlabs Big Cinemas added more shows. Industry sources had it that screens in California, Bay Area enjoyed houseful shows. Its looks like the film will be screened during the New Year holiday in Connecticut and Boston due to fans request.

Looks like bad weather played spoil sport on December 19th and 20th and did not allow fans to turn to theaters on those days but, collection resumed later. The collection must further improve as Christmas and New Year holidays are round the corner, plus online booking is going big business, adds the source.

Chennai box office - December 25 to 27
Wednesday, 30 December , 2009, 10:18

The CBO is booming this week as collections touched 96 per cent for multiplexes and 85 per cent for single screens in the city. It was a Christmas bonanza for the trade.

Vijay’s Vettaikaran, which carries mixed reports, has collection wise been steady and is still the number one thanks to the large number of screens.

Aamir Khan 3 Idiots has been very impressive, grossing nearly Rs 60 lakh from nine screens in Chennai, which is a new record for a Hindi film, and is at the number two slot.

At number three is Avatar, which is doing 100 per cent at three screens showing the 3D version, though ordinary 2D is not as strong in its second week.

In fourth position is Kandha Kottai, which is not doing well. 2012 refuses to go away and is still strong at number five.
